Lowake

Nine miles northwest of Paint Rock, in the extreme northwestern Concho County, on Ranch roads 1929 and 381, you will find the community of Lowake. Lowake was established as a speculative venture in 1909, when the Concho, San Saba and Llano Valley line built track from Miles (Runnels County) to Paint Rock, establishing Lowake at the midway point. The name Lowake comes from Lowe and Schlake, the two farmers who donated the land for the townsite. In 1909 Lowake received a post office and by 1927 boasted a population of fifty. By 1933 the population decreased to ten. A school, a seasonal industry, another business and several scattered buildings were part of the economy in 1936. Grades one through eleven, with approximately forty-four students were taught by three teachers, in 1940. By 1955 Lowake consolidated with Paint Rock school. (The school building is now used as a Community Center - 2006)  The population rose to an all time high of 120, in 1961. By 1963 Lowake had a post office, five businesses, one of which was a "world famous" Lowake Steakhouse, and a community hall.

Lowake Steakhouse is owned by Bill Noelke and the menu boasts Steak, of course, Texas size serving of fried onion rings, burgers, fries, fish, chicken, salad bar and more. It's reputation precedes it to this day. Drop the name "Lowake Steakhouse" in any area Texas or other areas and you are bound to hear someone say -- "Lowake...I hear you can get a great steak there!"  OR "Lowake! I ate a great steak there!"
